How can I relieve back pain?
Nearly two thirds of adults in the UK have experienced back pain at some time, and 2.5 million people suffer every day. Strengthening the back muscles is vital to prevent pain. Swimming is excellent, but use backstroke rather than front crawl or breaststroke, which can strain the neck. When your pain has settled, try using an exercise bike, but set the saddle high to ensure that you keep the natural curves in your spine. Avoid lifting and carrying whenever you can. If you have to lift something, bend your knees and keep your feet wide apart. Carry the object against your body so that its centre of gravity is close to yours, and bend your knees to put it down. When sitting, have a rolled-up towel in the small of your back to help to support the natural curve.
